Review: Project MC2 McKeyla's Lava Light Doll Set

Project MC2 is a kids TV series available on Netflix about some really smart secret spy girls. Of course they have to release a set of dolls of the main characters in the show. One weird thing is they released 2 different set of dolls. One basic set of dolls of just the figure but have severely limited articulation and a deluxe doll which has lots of additional articulation joint.
We will look at McKeyla and the Lava Light project kit in this deluxe doll set from MGA.

The packaging looks great, it has tons of little details drawn all over it. You can see the doll and a lava lamp science kit. Opening this package and getting the doll and accessories out was a ton of work. Not only were the ties holding the pieces together, they hot glued the ties onto the cardboard packaging. After carefully cutting cutting all the binding pieces off, this is what we have.

We have a fully dressed doll and accessories and the science project kit. The Doll comes with a little tablet computer and a composition book where she hides this little computer. a big white backpack and a comb that is shaped like a beaker. It also comes with a doll stand so you can stand up the doll without it falling over. The science kit is a little toy lava lamp.

The backpack is nice but unfortunately you cannot put anything into it, or if you do, you will have a really hard time taking it out.

The doll looks great. She is dressed up like she is in the show from her black hat down to her red boots, the details are astonishing. Just take a look at all the details we have here. The hat is attached to her head with ties going through her head. You can remove it, but it will probably not stay on her head like it is right now. Her hair is really long and pretty messy out of the packaging. but you can probably straighten and clean it up later. The jacket looks great with the leather-like texture on the sleeves. Some of the seams are a bit messy but it is not unexpected at this scale. She even has a MC2 ring on her hand.  The socks have some random letters and numbers on them, and the boots are split open on the back so you can remove them.

On this particular doll, all of her joints are hidden by her clothes which makes it look even better. The leather sleeves are soft but not soft enough and hinder some of the arm posability. Her shorts also get caught in her hip joints and trying to make her sit. Taking her jacket off you can see some of the articulated joints.  The articulation on this doll is great, it is much better than the standard Barbie dolls and is on par with the Monster High and Ever After dolls. She has full motion shoulders, 90 degree elbows with swivel, wrists pivot with swivel,  Full motion Hips, 90 degree knees with no swivel, and no ankles. They should have put a pivot on the knees though.  Her head can tilt slightly up and down, and can tilt her head to the side.

One of the more outstanding features of this doll are her inset eyes. They are not painted on eyes like on the other dolls by Hasbro or Mattel. These eyes really bring the doll to life. They are really detailed and really glossy. The eyelashes are a great finishing touch.

The Science kit it comes with is a toy lava lamp. You are supposed to put in some colored water and cooking oil and a fizzy tablet. it has a blinking light on the bottom to light it up. You can see the experiment in action in the official video done by McKeyla herself here.

Get this doll if you like something different from the common dolls on the shelves.
